This Phillips player is pretty much 90% functionality - it plays just about anything you put in it (including AVIs and JPGs) without complaint (I hear it is also region-code unlockable too). An absolute bargain.
Within two weeks I started having problems with the color. All the red was gone and everything but blues took on a yellow/green tinge.Switching from interlaced to progressive scan fixed it - but I still need to send it back because who knows how long the color will last with this mode. For the money - I guess it could be worth taking ones chances, but from the reviews I've read it looks like anyone who buys this needs to be prepared for a decent chance of hardware failure. This inexpensive unit, that can play a ton of formats had me pretty excited. I've never seen this from a dvd player before.
The Philips USA support website is less than helpful. It's irritating, and reads as though nobody ever had this problem before, such that the only solutions offered are "clean your disc" or "you are attempting to play a wrong region disc", so forth. I tried several different DVD's that were working fine previously, same results for all, so it's the player. The player attempted to load for much longer than normal, then said "error" on the display, and the TV screen said "bad disc". I bought mine about 18 months ago, so I've had a lot of fun with it, and it has performed great. This is just to add my experience to those of others who have bought this unit and had it stop working. Last night I put in a normal commercial release DVD. The owners manual says not to use any cleaning discs, but I've ordered a Philips DVD lens cleaning disc to try.
But for the price, it is a good value. The color on the TV is not as good as as the previous DVD player that I am replacing. I was able to play dvd's I purchased from overseas without any problem,
Works very well and the image is very nice. It is a very good sytem for a really good price. This dvd player is great. It takes a while to answer when you open and close the tray but it is a minor inconvenience.
